Peter Hammill/Prog-mania

Prog-mania: For those who do not know you, how can you define and present your music?

Peter Hammill : Hard to say, really. It covers any number of different styles, subjects’ approaches. I hope it remains honest.

Prog-mania : "Thin air" , like "Singularity", is a solo effort : how do you choose to work alone?

Peter Hammill: I’ve done it for many, many years, back to the seventies, when i began learning my craft. Working alone on a recording is really a kind of extension of the songwriting process right the way through into production.

Prog-mania: How do you compose: on guitar or piano?

Peter Hammill: Both. And neither. A tune can come into the head or fall into the hands as they are presented on the instrument.

Prog-mania: The lyrics are a very important part of your art. Can you tell us more about your philosophy?

Peter Hammill : Well, such of my philosophy as is coherent is certainly there in the texts and I have to say that it’s in them that it can be understood. Much better that way than in any explanation i might attempt outside them!

Prog-mania: What is in you mind the main differences between this last album and "Singularity"?

Peter Hammill: Singularity was definitely an album in the wake of my heart attack. so thin air is another step forward beyond that. It also explores some areas of music creation which are new to me. But of course i always hope for a bit of that with each new recording.

Prog-mania: As VDDG came back, will you always play all the instruments in your solo records?

Peter Hammill: probably not, though of course it has been the case for the last 2 solo albums. But of course there’ll always be a clear difference between VdGG and solo work even if other people play on the latter...even if those other people might at some point include Hugh and Guy!

Prog-mania: At what point of the writing process do you think a song is more PH or VDDG "compatible"?

Peter Hammill: these days it’s pretty clear which is the next upcoming project. so i’ll start writing with that in mind. For instance at the moment i’m looking almost exclusively at the next VdGG album. But also naturally some ideas will be more appropriate for solo than band work (or vice versa) and will self-select themselves.

Prog-mania: Since many years ago, you play solo or duet shows: what is for you the main difference between solo and band concerts? What do you find in those two different live playing?

Peter Hammill: chalk and cheese, as one says. Obviously VdGG shows are pretty electric and pretty loud. in a solo show it’s possible to go much, much quieter. But to be honest each show is taking place in the present tense and is what it is so it’s not possible really to do comparisons.

Prog-mania: At this point of your artistic life, what is the more important for you : your solo or the VDGG works?

Peter Hammill: both. As above, they take place at different - and clearly separated - times. It’s a pleasure and a privilege still to be able top do both at this stage and I derive great satisfaction and fulfillment from both.

Prog-mania: What were the reasons for VDGG rebirth?

Peter Hammill: it was “do it n now, or do it never”. Turned out to be even stranger - and eventually stronger - than that of course.

Prog-mania: Is it conceivable that in your future projects other musicians are present?

Peter Hammill: yes, both in VDGG and solo terms. But I suspect that the next VDGG project will still be just the three of us. This is of course another way of saying that i think all these projects have a good long way to run!

Prog-mania: What's planed for 2010?

Peter Hammill: right now of course I’m in the middle of a bit of solo touring and there’ll be some more of that. The VdGG album in prospect should start to get under way around spring for possible release later in the year. We’ll probably do some more vdgg shows in the summer.... whatever comes, will come!

Prog-mania: Is there a chance to hear again David Jackson in a future PH or VDDG album?

Peter Hammill: None at all!

Prog-mania: Which kind of music do you listen to and bands or artists do you really appreciate?

Peter Hammill: when I listen to music it’s mostly classical, of all sorts. i don’t follow, I haven’t ever really followed, what goes on in band world I’m afraid.

Prog-mania: What is your position about the so-called "Progressive music" ? It seems that many bands dislike this terminology.

Peter Hammill: these days I’m fairly calm about it. Whatever label a music has on it, if it has vitality and people find their way to it won’t matter what the label is....

Oui!
